OVARC Solar Project

OVARC Solar Project

In early 2005 the OVARC membership discussed alternative power for our repeater site located on Vrooman Ridge in Fine, New York.  The repeater is a vital link for emergency communications between Jefferson, Lewis, and ST. Lawrence Counties so it is important that we keep it on the air during power outages and any other emergency situations.  To fund this project we asked ST. Lawrence County Emergency Services to help us acquire a Grant and also solicited donations from our Club Members.  In the fall of 2005 we received funding through a ST. Lawrence County Public Health bio-terrorism grant to cover the cost of the needed solar equipment, but all of the preparation and hookup expenses had to be covered by the club.  OVARC member John Wetmore, of Scooter’s Sales & Service is also an electrical supply dealer in the Gouverneur area and offered to supply all the needed electrical materials and his time to help with the installation.  The solar project was completed around the first of November 2006 and is currently powering all of the Packet and APRS transceivers and the 147.135 repeater.  The system works extremely well and has powered the site for as long as 21 consecutive days without sun light.  Thank you to all those who gave their time and resources to this project.
